Smoking cigars – a moment of pleasure

Cigars are a symbol of indulgence and sophistication. Appreciated by many people around the world, they are synonymous with relaxation and time for yourself. But what makes cigars so special? We talk to Andreas Waespi, Vice Chairman of Despacito Cigars AG, about cigars, their production, and distribution.

Mr. Waespi, the enjoyment of a cigar begins with its manufacture. Where do the Despacito cigars come from and how do you ensure the desired high quality?
The tobacco plant is robust and even grows here in Switzerland. But particularly high-quality tobacco, which can then also be used for the production of quality products, is found almost exclusively in the Caribbean and certain Central American countries. The tobacco for our cigars comes mainly from the Dominican Republic. When we had the idea of producing our cigars, the enjoyment and passion for a first-class product was more important than the business. That’s why we chose a producer that guarantees high-quality standards and also high social and environmental standards.

Selling cigars depends on good marketing. How can quality be distinguished from mass-produced goods?
The art of cigar making requires years of experience and passion. The finest cigars are made from quality tobacco leaves that are carefully selected and hand-rolled. This artisan process gives each cigar its unique characteristics and flavors. You can see this careful processing in a cigar. A good cigar has a flawless wrapper and is compact, even after the cut. When smoking, the even burning down is an indicator of how carefully the processing was carried out. In addition, the taste should remain the same until the end and never become bitter. If you have a coating on your tongue after smoking a cigar, it is better to switch brands. The color of a cigar does not reveal anything about its quality. The color actually only depends on the type of tobacco. The color palette varies from golden to dark brown.

The quality of a cigar is also determined by accurate storage. What do you recommend for future connoisseurs?
The best storage is in a humidor with constant temperatures and humidity. A wine cellar, for example, is always a recommended environment. If stored correctly, cigars can be enjoyed for several years after purchase without loss in taste.

Enjoyment is a good keyword. With a good whisky, rum, or a glass of wine. When and how do you enjoy a cigar?
I prefer a good glass of wine, such as a heavy Tempranillo. Smoking cigars also always offers the opportunity to take a moment just for oneself, a great luxury in today’s world. But cigars are also suitable for completing a moment with friends after work or while playing golf. More and more women are also developing a taste for cigars. It is a treat for everyone. Of course, you can smoke cigars all year round, but many customers prefer warmer temperatures.

Cigar smoking and etiquette go hand in hand. What rules should be followed without immediately recognizing yourself as a beginner?
Cigar smoking is a pleasure. Enjoy the moment and give yourself and the cigar time. When lighting your cigar, make sure that you use a strong light and that the cigar burns evenly. You can hold the cigar at a slight angle. When it comes to tailors, too, please use quality tools. When your moment of pleasure is over, let the cigar burn out. You can then put the started cigar back in the humidor and light it again at the next opportunity.

The summer holidays promise hours of leisure. Where are your cigars available?
You can find all our cigars and other products on our website or enjoy them in selected restaurants and clubs in Switzerland.
